Comunicación de la ciencia en la era de las redes sociales: Conferencias ornitológicas online realizadas en Twitter

Due to information technologies development, the use of social networks has significantly increased in the last ten years. Science communication and outreach have also followed this trend by using social network platforms. Twitter is one of the best examples for online science communication and from 2015 began to host scientific conferences. Up to date, there have been two online ornithological meeting initiatives: The World Seabird Twitter Conference, hosting its fourth event in April 2018, and the British Ornithologists’ Union Twitter Conference, launched for the first time in November 2017. Both conferences were extremely participative with a mean of 79 presenters, from many countries of the five continents. Given this success, we believe that this type of events is an excellent opportunity to reach out with world-wide audiences. In addition, it allows to reach out worldwide local research, be up-to-date on what other scientists are doing in other regions and help decrease the organizing costs as well as the footprint of conference attendance.
